Tübingen Picturesquely situated on the River Neckar, the same beautiful
river that flows through Heidelberg further downstream, Tübingen is world-famous for its university founded in 1477, and one of Germany’s oldest. Many of the country’s greatest poets and scholars studied here, but most modern visitors will go to Tübingen for its unspoilt Old Town, with its narrow, winding streets and gabled houses rising like steps from the river banks to the mighty Renaissance castle high above the town.
The delightful market square with its ancient town hall is especially attractive on market days, when country people in regional costume can still be seen. But it is almost certainly the River Neckar itself which will leave the richest impression, with its reflections of the city’s historic buildings along its banks, particularly when viewed from the Platanenallee, a plane-tree lined avenue famed throughout Germany.
Castle Hohenzollern The castle is the ancestral seat of the prussian-brandenburg line as well as of the electoral-catholic line of the House of Hohenzollern. It ranks among Europe's most beautiful and popular castles. The stunning panorama of the Swabian landscape has already been admired by Kaiser Wilhelm II: "The view from Castle Hohenzollern is truly worth a voyage."
The disabled access is pretty good to the castle grounds. However a wheelchair is recommended if you have trouble with cobbled roads and steep inclines. But once these minor problems are overcome you will find the scenic views well worth the visit. Once you get to the main courtyard there is refreshments available and a large outdoor area with tables and chairs. If the weather looks poor ensure you pack your umbrella. Entrance to the castle and its internal grounds is only about 3euros and 2euros for the shuttle bus from the car park lower down. If your an enthusiastic walker you can trek from the very base of the castle along footpaths in the forested sides of the hill.
To the left is a group photo taken at Schnarrwacht Bastion, Castle Hohenzollern. The fantastic scenic views can be seen in the background. Below is a photo of the sentries from a different angle.
If you want to know more about the history of the castle and descendants of people who's ancestoral home was the castle then take a look at the Remmick-Hubert Home Site.
