Taff Ely Turtles Swimming Club for People with Disabilities
English conversation group This morning we visited the town hall where we met members of the town who engage on a weekly basis in English conversations to improve their grammar and oral skills when using the language. During their discussions they will talk about a vast range of topical subjects which may include; politics, economics, religion, culture, etc..
The meetings are arranged on an informal basis and anyone wishing to improve their language skills are all welcome to attend.
Further details can be obtained from the town hall.
Mike presented the group with a book about the history of Wales.
Rainbow cafe After our meeting with the English conversation group we went for dinner in the Rainbow cafe. It is situated inside the Town Hall complex with access to tables inside and outside in a small courtyard with steps leading up to the street. The cafe is staffed primarily with people with learning difficulties. They provided a fantastic and enthusiastic service to us, taking our orders and bringing us our food and drinks.
"...[T]he decision to contract out the management of our Citizens Forum to an association of disabled people had its roots in a Citizen Workshop in 2003 (the European Year of Disabled People). The association pays a small rent and manages the Cafe Rainbow with four disabled employees. For me, cooperating with disabled people who work in the same building as me is personally very rewarding."(Hans Wezel) Full Interview We had a traditional meal which was a couple of ravioli type pasta packets which were about 10 cms square filled with different mixtures of meat and served with a large salad. After our hearty meals and drinks we took time to digest our meals and sunned ourselves in the courtyard which also has a very nice fountain, and is a great place for quiet relaxation.
Official reception After lunch we all met in the Rathaus for the official reception with;
Burgermeister Rolf Siebert
President of twinning association - Jerome Deffillion
Deputy President - Sonngard Leopold
Helmut and Renate Frick
Steffan and Kathrin Ubele
Burgermeister Rolf Siebert thanked us for visiting Nuertingen again and for our efforts in strengthening the twinning links between Pontypridd and Nuertingen. The trip was made possible by the efforts put in by the German Twinning Association and the families Ubele, Frick and Maerkert who all put tremendous effort into assisting us with accomodation and travel arrangements prior to and during our stay in Germany. It was a great honour to see our flag outside the town hall in recognition of our visit. Mike gave a short speech thanking our German friends and officials for the great hospitality during our visit and presented the Burgermeister with a book on Wales that they may like to display in the town hall for people to learn more about our country.
