Part 1. May be certified before the day of the main test by a senior club instructor.
- Swim 400 metres, by any method, without stopping or touching the poolside, on a continuous circuit.
Part 2. To be examined by a recognised external examiner from another club.
- Swim on the back, a figure of eight, within an area of 10 metres by 5 metres.
- Submerge and push off from the side of the pool, and glide under water to reach the surface without any swimming stroke.
- Submerge (can dive in) and recover 2 items, 1 metre apart, from a depth of at least 1 metre, without resurfacing until completion of the collection.
- Submerge vertically feet first, until the water is 0.5 metres above the swimmer's head. Rise to the surface and maintain a vertical position (floating), without touching the bottom, for 2 minutes or more.
Part 3. To be examined on the same day, and by the same examiner, as above.
A series of options to enable swimmers without legs, without arms, or with other specific problems to perform one skill within each of the diciplines not making any allowances for their disability. When possible, more than one of each of these skills should be learned and the swimmer's techniques should be extended and improved.
- Enter the water headfirst by one of the following:
- Seal dive using arms only.
(Best in pools where water depth reaches poolside)
- Standing dive.
- Sitting dive.
- Perform one of the following:
- Rotary crawl using arms only.
(Alternate 3 on back and 3 on front for 20/25 metres)
- Twin tail using legs only.
(Alternate 3 strokes on back, side and front for 20/25 metres)
- Rolling log.(2 rotations)
- Perform one of the following:
- Wash tub using arms only.
(Crossed legs and rotate body 3 rotations in both directions)
- Spinning top using legs.
(Same as washtub but using legs only)
- Water wheel.
(Scissors kick into a circle 3 rotations both directions)
- Perform one of the following:
- Back somersault.
- Front somersault.
- Pendulum, completing 1.5 swings.
